Our History

The Origin of Chromodiversity: A Journey of Discovery

In 2004, Elliot Polak’s life changed with the birth of his twin sons. Alongside the excitement of parenthood came the unexpected news that one of his sons had 'Klinefelter syndrome', characterized by an extra X chromosome. As Elliot searched for answers about his son’s condition, he encountered outdated, fear-based information, with limited support and no clear path forward. Over the years, he saw his son face a lack of adequate support, particularly in school, which struggled to recognize and nurture his unique strengths. Driven to find a better way, Elliot first created a Facebook support group for parents, which eventually grew into the Chromodiversity Foundation. Foundation.

Founding Chromodiversity

Determined to create a supportive environment for his son and children like him, Elliot established the My XXY | Chromodiversity Foundation in 2020 as a U.S. non-profit organization. Initially focused on XXY, the organization has since broadened its scope to include all X & Y chromosome variations and other DNA and developmental differences. In 2022, we introduced the term 'chromodiversity' as a way to depathologize the language of genetics at a time of increased screening and early diagnoses. Just as 'biodiversity' refers to the diversity of life and 'neurodiversity' to the diversity of brains, chromodiversity became a way to talk about the diversity of human genetic codes in a natural, positive light.

Building a Global Community

Chromodiversity has quickly grown into one of the most trusted voices dedicated to changing the way the world perceives and supports genetic diversity. Guided by an Advisory Board of visionary leaders and a global team of Brand Ambassadors, the organization has expanded its reach to over 15 countries and 10 states. Recognizing the scarcity of reliable online resources—and the prevalence of misinformation in many forums—Chromodiversity launched Chromodiversity for Families™️, a digital platform providing trusted resources and guidance for families navigating the unique challenges and joys of chromodiversity.

Recently, in response to a growing need for in-person support and social connection, Chromodiversity launched a series of camps where children can engage in activities ranging from rock climbing to sensory play with their peers. These camps are designed not only for fun but to help children discover their strengths and build self-esteem.

A Movement for Change

As Chromodiversity continues to grow, our vision has expanded to advocate for greater understanding and acceptance of chromosomal and DNA differences in schools and communities. The organization has become a leading voice in the chromodiversity movement, working tirelessly to reshape perceptions and support systems worldwide. As we advance with science and technology—supported by clinical research and global experts—we remain dedicated to our core mission: celebrating each child's unique strengths and creating a world where variations in DNA are recognized not as challenges but as valuable aspects of human diversity.
